PDF books and publications will not open in Mac OS Books app but seems to be fine on iOS.

This is a maddening issue with MacBook Pro 13, running macOS Monterey. I have various books in PDF that I can't get in epub. The problem is being able to read and markup a publication in the Mac version of the book app so that it will sync with iOS. On my iPad or iPhone, the Book app works fine where I can markup the PDF or bookmark pages, it also tracks where I last stopped reading. But on the Mac when I open a PDF book it opens in my Adobe reader as a brand new document every time. It cannot save, markup or bookmark pages. Can this be fixed? Or should I just use my iPad for PDF books? Help!!
