iPhone 12 Pro’s battery drains excessively after iOS 17.4.1 Update

After the last update (17.4.1) several days ago, my IPhone 12 Pro’s battery drains excessively. A battery that lasted for almost a day now is down to 50-60% within a few hours without using my phone. My battery health is listed as 89%.

I have done the following:

  1. Done a hard restart multiple times
  2. Updated all my applications

I suppose I could do a factory reset, but that seems a drastic step.

I would even consider a battery replacement if I didn’t think this excessive drain was largely a software problem.

Other than a factory reset or a battery replacement, is there something else I can try to fix this problem?

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

The measure of battery health deterioration/drainage is subjective and can vary depending on individual usage patterns. There is no universal standard to determine whether the battery health deterioration/drainage is normal or abnormal because it heavily relies on how the battery is used and maintained.

Protect & Prolong the Life of your iPhone's Battery:

  1. About the battery usage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch ...
  2. Batteries - Maximising Performance - Apple (IN)
  3. iPhone Battery and Performance

Try to monitor Battery usage by iPhone Activity as shown below

What is shown under battery usage? Checking that would give you an indication of the usage behavior.

  1. Background Activity
  2. Notifications
  3. Connected to Charger
  4. Or any Other

See the pic below (iPhone 12 Pro iOS 17.3.1)

"Show Activity" feature will show you more info see the pic below

Try some of these options too.

To prolong the life of your iPhone battery, you can follow these tips and best practices:

  1. Optimize Battery Charging: Enable the "Optimized Battery Charging" feature on your iPhone. It helps reduce the wear on the battery by slowing down the battery aging process. You can find this option in Settings > Battery > Battery Health. About Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone - Apple Support (IN)
  2. Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, can negatively impact your battery life. Avoid exposing your iPhone to excessive heat or cold, such as leaving it in direct sunlight or in a freezing car.If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot or too cold – Apple Support (UK)
  3. Use Original Chargers and Cables: Always use Apple's original chargers and cables or certified third-party accessories. Low-quality chargers or cables can damage the battery and reduce its lifespan. Identify counterfeit or uncertified Lightning connector accessories - Apple Support (IN)
  4. Avoid Draining the Battery to Zero: Charge it whenever the charge becomes lower than 20%. The rest is up to you when to charge. how long to charge, how often to charge, which adapter to use starting from 5W to 140W USB-C Power Adapter etc.
  5. Optimize Display Settings: Adjust your display settings to optimize battery life. Lower the screen brightness, enable auto-brightness, and use shorter screen timeout durations. Adjust the display and text size on iPhone - Apple Support (IN)
  6. Minimize Background App Refresh: Limit the number of apps allowed to refresh in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and disable it for apps that don't require real-time updates. Switch apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)
  7. Disable Push Email: Push email notifications can drain your battery quickly. Instead, set your email accounts to fetch data manually or at longer intervals. You can change this setting in Settings > Mail > Accounts > Fetch New Data.

I have the same issue and it started with 17.4.1 as well. Also my Apple Watch (7th) also started draining quickly with the same update. 17.5 hasn’t fixed it.

I have done all the things the condescending replying person suggested, but the fact is the only thing that changed was the iOS update.

Since this also affected my watch I wonder if it is a Bluetooth issue.

At this point resetting the phone seems to be my only option.

June 20 2024 My iPhone Pro just started this a couple of days ago. When I went to bed it was fully charged. I shut down all the apps and the screen except for the wake up alarm. Overnight the battery drained, and with minimal use since I woke up it’s now at 12%. Battery checks in at 86% healthy.

last week my phone could last 24 hours with my normal use. You can see it draining overnight in the photo.

Same here, honestly I was a big fan of iPhone (stability, usability), but it is not what it was before... same with the supported iOS on older phones/tablets, why? Just because you don't care... as well as slowing down devices, blocking change of the battery DIY... I don't know... I don't see in this benefits for the customers... I can understand that you won't provide latest features to some old devices, fine, but let's leave on them version that does work... the HW is still usable... but because the software is outdated, users can't use it... not the same like with android... really thinking about the switch back... I like it, from 6S, then 7+, now 12 Pro, but even now the 12 Pro is not what it was... same like the iPad Air 2... still nice, usable... but SW made it worse... and yes I belive that this is on purpose... without any customer benefiting from this... I did think about last 14 Pro, not available... and with the USB-C and all accesories change... it will be probably easy step to think about as they can't do this, it must work the best as it can on every device... and honestly we can even create a custom rom, slim, fast, latest and have it on very old phone... Make no sense for me to buy a new phone every 2 years or so... when it can nicely last for 5+ years and create more garbage and use more resources... spend more money... why not to pay for the software for example after some time to keep it fast and secure? Wouldn't that be a better way? I can udnerstand that can be hard to keep several versions, catch bugs, make it secure... but... if you would think about it upfront, you could keep the same version, just with some stuff not available... thats it... keeping the core, and rest as addons... core fast as rocket and addons based on the phone specs or HW availability with possiblity of slowdown if really needed? The base must be fast what ever version you have, but that is not true anymore. And that is shame... it shows no interest in the customers money spend before... and for example some different usage of the device after it's main lifecycle...?
