Force internal HDD to sleep?

I’d like my 2015 iMac on yosemite to run on an external SSD and have my internal hard disk drive sleep.

iMac 27″, OS X 10.10

I don't believe there is a way to sleep an individual drive except by ejecting it. Even then, depending on the drive itself it may or may not sleep after being ejected; some of my external drives do, some don't; it depends on the drive's controller. (It's also possible that macOS may not ever let an internal drive (HDD) sleep.)
