iMessage sending as text

When

try to iMessage my partner it goes as a text (green) instead of iMessage (blue); we’ve compared settings on our iPhones which seem the same, and this is happening even when we both have WiFi access?

Thanks, we'll try that approach, but with our data plan and spotty cel service here I don't think that's a long term solution; but if it works it might head us towards figuring out why we don't have a data connection with wifi.

It's not intended as a long-term solution. It's just for diagnostic purposes. If everything works perfectly on cellular data, the issue may be with WiFi.

Thanks for the link, but 3 of these reasons do not apply; the mysterious " iMessage is temporarily unavailable" produces more questions than answers; We are both able to send "blue bubbles" to other iPhone users, (although some periodically 'go green') just not to each other?

Any other ideas?
