imessage text box disappeared on Macbook group chat

The text box at the bottom of a group chat has disappeared when viewing it on my Macbook. The text box still appears on my phone.

Steps I have tried:

  1. quitting/starting Messages
  2. going to Messages/iMessage and signing out and signing back in
  3. going to Messages/iMessage and unclicking Enable Messages in iCloud and clicking it back on
  4. deleting the message and having a group member send another text to see if the text box then reappears (it doesn't)
  5. restarting computer
  6. updating OS and trying again

This just started happening, and it only happens on my MacBook Air, not on my iphone. Running Sonoma 14.4.1

MacBook Air, macOS 14.4

Somehow when I checked the group, I wasn't actually in it anymore. I went on my iPhone and checked the group and was able to add myself back and then the MBP showed the text entry again.

Okay, the solution I’ve found so far is to re-add myself on the devices that work. For instance: text thread A works on my MacBook AND Mac mini, but not my iPhone. I had to re-add myself not only on the MacBook but also the mini- THEN it worked on my phone. Absolutely ridiculous bug but it works. So for now, make sure you are added on all devices to whatever thread and it should work. 🙄

This did not work. I have the same problem. I can see the texts in real time, but can not react, nor text. There is no emoji picker or app store icon, or even a rounded box. Here are the solutions I have tried:

Once I have some time today, I'll try out this: Missing input box in messages - Apple Community

Has anyone had any progress on this? This is really annoying because i don't have a phone right now. I'm forced to text from my apple watch when I need to communicate with this group chat.

I have the same issue also... I have tried signing in and out. Tried restarted computer. Tried deleting chat and restarting. Tried starting new chat group. Extremely frustrating as I cannot reply or send files to group chat from Mac. What has happened to Apple recently? It used to be a reason for now nearly 20years I have been a Mac Guy - but now it seems very unreliable in many areas?! When will this be fixed?!

I came here with the same issue. I hesitated to continue the complaint, but maybe one more will help Apple fix it. I have it on several different threads, and they are vice versa on whether they work on my iPhone, MacBook, or Mac Mini. It's very strange. I'm not sure why different devices handle the same group thread, on the same cloud, differently. APPLE, PLEASE HELP!!! This is very frustrating!

Still not working or an update. I have switched some groups to now WhatsAPP. After now a 18 year Mac use and a BIG Apple Fan, I find myself wishing and hoping for an alternative to Apple. I am not the only one! There were never these bugs prior, and if there were they would be fixed immediately. For over one month my FaceTime was also not working on Mac - for ONE month. Truly unbelievable. Get your S..t together Apple!

I've noticed that my messages just aren't syncing correctly anymore. My MacBook is used for work, so once I'm done with that for the day and primarily use my phone in the evenings, the next day when I open my laptop, there are a lot of "unread" messages that I did read on my phone. Once I initiate a sync on both devices, the box disappears again.
