DVD library is no longer showing up in my Apple TV app

Back in the good old days of iTunes - I had ripped all of my purchased DVDs to iTunes on an external drive. Over time I have added new titles and when iTunes was split into multiple apps I reorganized my movies so that they showed up in the TV app. Now, March 29, 2024 - I connected my drive to my Mac and went into the TV app (as well as the Apple TV device) and my movies no-longer show. Even the "Computers" app on the Apple TV only shows my music. All my movies and music files are there on the hard drive, but nothing is showing up on any of the TV apps either on Mac or Apple TV device. What's going on? What am I missing?

The library of the TV app on Mac (or PC) is a database file with all the content that has been added to the app, and their locations. The library is not the Media Folder location.

Your movie files from other sources, that have been added to the TV app library would be listed under Movies (if tagged as movie), or Home Videos (if untagged or tagged as home video), and also under Downloaded.

If the library database file has been reset, or moved and thereby unlinked/unfindable, then you may need to add the files again. There is an Add to Library menu item, or you can use drag-and-drop to the main area, when any library view is open in the app. Depending on your settings for the app, your added media files may be copied to a configured location, or else say where they are, if you have configured to not copy.

Note that the current TV app on Mac does support interlaced content, but the Computers app on the Apple TV box (Home Sharing) doesn’t. This may affect content originating from certain DVDs, in combination with the chosen conversion method.

The TV app on the Apple TV box doesn’t support Home Sharing.

Home Sharing on Apple TV will offer library video content in the Computers app instead. That is the only way, when using Apple’s software. It should show tabs along the top of the screen for various types of content that are shared for the selected library.

Verify that you have set the Mac to activate Home Sharing with the TV app’s video media library.

On modern versions macOS, that is in System Settings, not in the TV app.

  • Settings﹥General﹥Sharing﹥Media Sharing﹥﹥ⓘ﹥
  • ﹥Library Name: «something unique among all your computers» **
  • ﹥☑ Home Sharing, with matching Apple ID account as for the Apple TV box’s Home Sharing account setting.

Could your Computers app access to a library with just music be from a different computer? The Home Sharing library should bring together all supported shared content types.

** If more than one library is shared on your home network, then you should ideally recognize the name and know for which computer that is.

Thank you, Urquhart1244. Yeah, I realized that with the various iOS updates and TVOS that links got broken etc. On my Mac with the drive attached I "added" (not copied) all the content from the drive and amazingly it relinked everything with just a few things mis-categorized (Movies, Home Videos, TV, etc). So once that was sorted out, I eagerly went to the Apple TV device and... nothing was there except the movies that were purchased. It's a shame because it was lovely to see all my films and TV shows listed and playable on the Apple TV box. And no, the only thing listed in the "Computers" app annoyingly is just the music library. Anyway, I'll see if I can get this thing working and update this post. No news is bad news. ;-)
