Unexpected shutdown on iMac desktop

I just purchased my iMac 27" desktop March 12, 2024. I was working on an important document and the computer shutdown unexpectedly - just went black. I also notice while in sleep mode, when I tried to wake it up, it was shut down. The power strip has a lamp and ring light and they still had power.

What could be the problem?

You're new iMac is way too new to be experiencing a shutdown issue like this. However, anything is possible.

Unfortunately, your Mac is now just outside of the Apple 14-day return policy, so we will need to try to figure out what the issue may be that is causing this.

First, I suggest that you unplug the Mac from the power strip and plug it into a wall outlet directly. With that done, power it back up. Can it power up to the macOS desktop being displayed on the screen?

  • If it does, then we can continue troubleshooting.
  • If it does not, then power it back down, and then, make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store to have it looked at. Alternately, you can contact Apple Support directly for assistance. To do so, simply select the "Support" link on the lower left-hand side of this forum's web page.

Should it power-up successfully to the macOS desktop, I would suggest that you run an EtreCheck report, and optionally, post it here if you need assistance with interpreting its results. Ok, Amazon is an Authorized Apple Reseller. That would mean that it still should come with the one-year Apple hardware warranty against manufacturing defects ... but, I believe, that one year starts when Amazon got it, not when you purchased it from Amazon. So, I'm not 100% sure it will still apply. Instead you will need to work with Amazon on their warranty/return policy.

Again, there appears to be something amiss with this Mac. As such, I would suggest that you consider returning it before its not possible to do so. Whether or not, you want to buy another Mac from Amazon is certainly up to you, but I think you will happier in the long run if you got it directly from Apple.
