Fan is running often and loudly

I have closed most tabs and shut down most other things running on my laptop but the fan keeps running at a loud high level. I am working at a desk with all vents exposed. First of all I'm worried that it isn't cooling properly and will damage the computer. Second, it is hard to focus. I've looked up on Apple Help but can't find any additional steps. When I turn my computer off the fan stops but I need to get work done and cannot turn it off right now.

Run the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected.

If no hardware issues, if you have an Intel Mac, then try an SMC Reset.....there is no SMC Reset for an Apple Silicon M-series Mac.

Otherwise software you are using is causing the laptop to work hard enough to cause the laptop to heat up requiring the fan to run at high speed. Typical culprits are anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, and third party security software....none of which are needed on a Mac.

FYI, you should always include the exact model of your device & version of macOS being used. You can get this information by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac".
