Can't send texts to Android from my Macbook Air

I have a new 15" MacBook Air. All my files were transferred via a USB-C to USB-C cable without a problem (or so I thought). Now I cannot seem to send a text to some contacts (android). When I select the Messages Icon and put the phone number into the To: box at the top (who I am sending to) it looks fine, however when I start to compose the message it phone # at the top immediately turns RED is color and will not send.

SMS/MMS text messages (which would be the type sent to Androides) can only be sent by using a phone. They can be sent from a Mac by using the following instructions to send them through an iPhone. See: Forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to other devices - Apple Support
