apple Time Machine not working properly

I am running Big Sur and I backup (almost) every day.

If I let TM backup every hour, there is no problem but sometimes I take my MBP to an office and

when I want to backup after one or two days, it got stuck at "preparing backup"

Sometimes I have to delete one or even two backups before it is starting.

Annoying.

Could anyone please advise?

Manually deleting backups is a good way of corrupting the complex database and not recommended.

The ""preparing backup" error is one sign of a failing drive...

You could try erasing/reformatting/initializing the drive as new and start over to compare your results.

Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support

Alternatively— buy/start a new drive for your TM backups to preserve the old drive if it is your only **.

3-2-1 Backup Strategy: three copies of your data, two different methods, and one offsite.

More than one device, more than one backup methodology.

I have to contradict you:

Deleting the last backup is safe as it is an incremental backup. Arguable whether it should be done of course.

The disk, Apple. 768 GB ssd, was recently erased, reformatted and checked, no problem there.

I have an MBP and MBAir and both behave the same. Difficult to get a backup started after a few days.

I thought that maybe there is a workaround for this annoying behavior. I might have to move to cloud backup.

If anyone has found a solution, I'll be happy to hear.
