iTunes Library.itl does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file - High Sierra

Since a few days I get the following message when opening itunes (version 12.8.3.1 on High Sierra MBP mid 2014).

The file "iTunes Library.itl" does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged)".

When I restore the Itunes folder from time machine it works once and I can see my library but when I close it down and re-open itunes I get the same message again.

Any ideas for solutions?

Thank you.

I made a copy of the library itl file and saved it in another folder. When I copy that file into the library and over-write the one itunes created and then re-open itunes it works again - but only once as before. So at the moment I have to copy the original library file (that I restored from time machine) every time I re-open itunes, which means I cannot create new playlists.

Just to mention the podcasts sync fine with my iphone. When I deleted a show, it immediately deleted on my iphone as well.

It seems that Itunes does something to the itl file to keep it from re-opening. Any insight would be very much appreciated in the 'vintage' device community :)
