Replacement AirPods case won’t connect with iPhone

I lost my Airpods Pro case and have just bought a non-Apple replacement. It’s charging the AirPods fine, and allows me to use the AirPods with other Apple devices (which still recognize my AirPods under their existing name). But when I try to connect the case to my phone (iPhone 11), it shows up as ‘not your AirPods’. It allows me to start connecting, but when I press the button at the back of the case, the LED stays green and then goes out. It never turns white or amber. And the connection never progresses. My AirPods are no longer listed among my Bluetooth devices. So I just can’t find a way to connect them to my phone.

iPhone 11, iOS 17

AirPods are not designed to work with fake cases, and fake cases are only designed to work with fake AirPods. If you have problems with the case, take it up with the manufacturer.

The Apple Support Community is here to solve problems with Apple products. This is a problem with a fake case - we have no idea how it works and how to pair it. It may damage your AirPods, and we can’t help if you’re using them with a product that Apple themselves doesn’t want you to use. Not only does this void you of your warranty, but it can cause Apple to refuse any and all repairs to your AirPods. Apple themselves have purposefully made other cases incompatible. If you’re not happy with that, get a new pair of non-Apple headphones.

The Apple replacement case also allows you to connect with other iPhones. All you have to do is hold the button at the back until the light flashes white, and pair them. This will pair them, but not link them to that iPhone’s Apple ID or unlink them from your iPhone- this is how people can track down stolen AirPods with Find My.

I think the problem is that I have paired the (fake) AirPods that came with the case with my phone, and they are now associated with the case, and I can’t switch them to my genuine AirPods.

AirPods are not designed to work with fake cases. This case is already linked to a pair of fake AirPods, and Apple will not service this.

This is the Apple Community. If you have problems fake AirPods and its case , take it up with the manufacturer, which is not Apple.

You should never use a third-party AirPods case. You can get a replacement one from the Apple Store. Using a third-party case damage the battery health of the AirPods and sacrifices many of the benefits of AirPods - their ease of use. You can also find a lost AirPods Pro case with Find My.

Using a third-party case voids you of your warranty and will not be serviced by Apple.
