It's completely normal for the QR code information to disappear from your iPhone screen after you scan it. This is because the QR code acts like a quick key that unlocks the information it contains, like a website address or a downloadable file.

Once your iPhone reads and processes the code, it directs you to the linked content. There's no need to keep the QR code itself displayed on the screen.

If you want to revisit the information encoded in the QR code, you'll typically need to scan it again. However, depending on the type of information, there might be other ways to access it as well. Here are some possibilities:

  • Websites: If the QR code linked to a website, the address might appear in your Safari history or browsing suggestions.
  • App Downloads: If it linked to an app, it might be pending installation in the App Store's "Purchased" tab.
  • Contact Information: If it encoded contact details, you might have the option to save them directly to your iPhone's Contacts app.

So, while the QR code itself disappears after scanning, the information it leads to can often be found elsewhere on your phone.

Open the Camera app from the Home Screen, Control Centre or Lock Screen. Select the rear-facing camera. Hold your device so that the QR code appears in the viewfinder in the Camera app. Your device will recognise the QR code and display a notification.

the fact that you scan a qr code then switch to another app (for example to get a password or a verification code) and then the QR code browser disappears is so so so annoying. It’s been like this for years. But I’ve just lived with it but today I happened again and I thought I would check to see if it’s just me. Apparently not.

what is more annoying is that the super user responding to your obvious bug reporting does not seem to understand the actual issue. Perhaps try the work flow before responding and assuming we are idiots.

  1. scan a qr code
  2. it opens info in a browser (that is like this weird temporary browser
  3. switch to any other app
  4. try to switch back to the QR code scanner or app and you will find it had disappeared.

this is hyper annoying for example when you have just spent 5 mins filling out all your registration details for some service.

please Apple this is a glaring bug. Please fix it. Just have the QR code open direct into safari.

Hey, thanks for the prompt response, however, I understand disappearance of QR code, I am talking about disappearance of the pages that it leads to i.e. scanned a QR code and which led to a new webpage, done adding items to cart, on checkout, processing for payment, switching to different app to get financial details switch back and there’s nothing, no webpage / no history, etc.

I know exactly what you mean and it’s a bad user experience.

The ”solution” is to scan the QR code with the Camera app which opens the link in Safari (if that is what the QR code leda to) instead of within the Code Scanner (or press the Safari button in the lower right corner of the Code Scanner to open the page in Safari), but that doesn't help much for the user who unknowingly use the Code Scanner function to set thing up and the might switch away from it only to find that it's not there anymore when wanting to go back.
