Cable is not fitting an iPhone 13

I ran into a really strange thing. I was helping my mom to set up an iPhone 13 that a friend gave her when they upgraded. She wanted it wiped and reset. Easy and simple except for one thing. The power port strangely looks like USB-C but is narrower in both directions. It is also wider in both directions than Lightning which plugs in loosely and makes no connection. A power cable was not included but I have both USB-C and Lightning cables in hand. I am baffled as I have found nothing online. Is it possible for the port to lose part of itself somehow so a Lightning port will no longer provide contact? Someone here suggested a defective port but clearly it worked for the previous owner as it was charged when given to my mom so I am wondering if the port is damaged. I've been unsuccessful in getting in touch with the person to ask for the cable they used so am asking the question here.
