IMAC wireless keyboard not working

When logging on to my account the keyboard works, however once logged on it stops. Only some of the keys are useable. I understand a softwear update might solve this and my MAC is due one (currently software 13.6.1). However due to my keyboard only partially working when logged on, I’m not able to enter my full password to authorise the update. Copying and pasting the password does not work and because the keyboard works in full prior to logging in (I’m able to type my password in to the account) I’m not wanting to spend money on a new one. Any advice would be appreciated.

First ensure the keyboard is fully charged. The please do the following:

The following will require any USB keyboard and mouse. If you don’t have them, borrow or buy them, they are inexpensive!

1.     Connect the USB keyboard and mouse to the computer.

2.     Open System Preferences – Bluetooth

3.     Un-pair the wireless keyboard and mouse.

4.     Turn off Bluetooth

5.     Restart the computer in Safe Mode per the directions in Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

6.     Restart the computer normally.

7.     Open System Preferences – Bluetooth

8.     Turn on Bluetooth

9.     Re-Pair the wireless keyboard and mouse.

10.  Unplug the USB keyboard and mouse and begin testing the wireless devices again.
