My MBP 15 only charging at 60W instead of the expected 96W

Hello,

Under the Power panel of System Information, my MBP 15" 2019 reports that it's charging at 60W. However, I'm using a 96W USB-C charger. I switched because my 87W charger died. Prior to the switch, the System Information Power panel was reporting that it was charging at 87W.

I understand that the 15" MBP cannot charge at 96W, but shouldn't it at least be charging at 87W with the 96W charger instead of a slower 60W? I don't understand why it would be doing this.

I tried it when my battery was full and when it was at ~95 percent, but System Information still reports that it's charging at 60W. CoconutBattery reports my MBP charger as a 60W charger too. Could it be the charging cable (which to the best of my knowledge, is genuine)?

I remember using this cable with the 87W charger before it and it worked fine (displayed under System Information as 86W)

Thank you

<<. reports that it's charging at 60W. >>

There are THREE classes of USB charge cables.

• Ordinary Brand-X USB-C charge cables or cables with no ratings, support charging at UP TO 60W.

• Premium quality cables, including the original Apple cable, have larger charge conductors and support charging up to 100 W capability.

• Super-Premium USB-C cables specified as 240 W -capable have even larger charge conductors, and can charge up to their stated 240W, if the charger can supply higher power. They can allow Fast Charging (of Macs that support fast charging) from the 140 W power adapter.

Conclusion: if your power adapter supports higher power, but your USB-C cable does NOT, replacing the USB-C charge cable with a higher-rated cable should solve the charge rate problem.

Have you tried using the other USB-C ports, especially on the other side of the laptop?

Try an SMC Reset (make sure to read the instructions carefully since the process has changed for the T2 Macs).

Are you connecting the power adapter directly to the laptop? Adapters & docks can prevent the full power of the charger from reaching the laptop.

Try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. Unfortunately the diagnostics don't go into any details so it may only report a general charging issue, but if it reports something else then you may know you have hardware issue.
