I am unable to launch a file from Files on my iPhone due to a 'permissions' error

I posted previously about a permissions problem with iOS 17.

iOS 17.3.1 permissions problem - Apple Community

There were no replies but since the problem was caused by an iOS update, I expected apple would correct it on the next update. This did not happen and I’m desperate to solve this. How can I assign permissions to a file in iOS? I use this file almost daily and need to restore access, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have identified the initial file permission problem to be caused by apple's touch id. The file is password protected and when first opened, I must type the password. It then ask to "allow touch id", to which I click yes. Later trying to open the file using touch id generates the permission error as mentioned. Saying no to touch id, then using the password every time, allows full access to the file. This is clearly a bug in touch id introduced with iOS 17 which remains unfixed in the latest release.

I'm still in need of a solution to the video problem. Some play, most do not. Since movies do not use touch id, I was wrong to suggest the problem was related. In addition, the videos fail to play on my M1 macbook as well as my iPhone SE. All the problem movies were purchased and downloaded through iTunes during the twenty-teens.

Thank you for pointing this out. I am late to updating my iOS and expected this would be a known problem. I assumed there was a setting for permissions where I simply needed to select “allow”. I did not expect there could be anything unique about my situation.

I’ve been sharing files via AirDrop and using them on the phone for many years with no problem. The permission error only began after updating to iOS 17. I’ve attached a screen capture showing some of the files I store on my phone and the error message I receive. I have no problem viewing the excel inventory file or the car manual pdfs. The file generating the error is my bank account which uses SEE Finance.app. The app was purchased through Apples app store and is using the latest version. This is the only shared file which is password protected. I suspect there is a change or flaw in iOS 17 when handling password protected files.

I appreciate any suggestions to solve this. Thank you.

To improve understanding of the phenomenon, it would be highly beneficial if you could share a screenshot. Visual representations carry greater impact than written descriptions.

Please remember that this is a public forum, so when attaching a screenshot, please avoid including any personal credentials such as IP addresses, card details, email IDs, Apple IDs, IMEI numbers, serial numbers, phone numbers, order IDs, or any identifiable location information if you are sharing a map.

With the limited information that you have provided, It is hard to even guess the problems faced by you.

Yes, the file opened successfully for many years using the program "See Finance". I purchased the program through Apples App Store – the Mac OS version for my MacBook and the iOS version for my phone. The file is password protected and I use AirDrop to copy the latest version to my phone every Sunday. The first time I open it on the phone, it ask for the password and offers to use touch ID for future use. Touch ID works for the rest of the week until I delete the file and AirDrop the newer version of the file.

Since iOS 17 was installed, it fails with the message shown above as soon as I try to open it. It never ask for the password or touch ID. It clearly seems iOS 17 doesn't understand how to ask for the password and is confusing the password with permissions.

I suspected this problem was caused by the file being password protected so I removed the password. I then air dropped the unprotected version to my phone. Unfortunately, I continue to receive the error message.

My original forum post received several "me too" clicks and that post was 2 months ago. I'm very much hoping someone has solved this problem and will tell me how they did it. I also welcome any suggestions as I'm willing to try anything to solve this. Thank you.

This problem remains unresolved and I've discovered additional problems which may be related. Some previously purchased movies and TV shows are not playing. Sometimes they play audio with no picture, sometimes the player loads and timer shows it playing but I see or hear nothing and other times it returns an error message "a problem loading content". I should point out that I am not streaming these but trying to play from files purchased and downloaded from Apple. It seems unrelated to the age of the file as I'm successfully playing items from 2014 and failing to play newer downloads.
