Error “Is this lightning adapter connecting a pair of headphones?” when plugged in

I read some (unanswered) posts about this issue here, but still.

I have a pair of genuine EarPods. I connected it first, it had been working well FOR MONTHS.

Then, suddenly (I was holding it in my hand), the pop-up appeared "is it a headphone" where I selected the only option...and there is no other viable option, like EarPods.

Ever since, the sound quality dropped significantly, and the phone does not recognize the original device...same as in other posts.

This is the SECOND EarPods that does exactly the same. Mic quality is sooooo bad I often have to detach the device. How can I reset anything so that it starts working again?

I also tried another iPhone SE2020, same pop-up. It looks like EarPods get dysfunctional after a while...

Help?

Yes, cleaning was the first thing, did not help (in both cases, months apart). Else, the problem came up when it was connected, probably no extra debris could have gone inside.

Debris could have already been inside, but if you've cleaned it carefully (I'd give it one more go. It's astonishing how stuff can get pushed all the way to the back of the port and get smashed so flat you can hardly tell it's there), then I'd guess that there's something wrong with the port. I'd arrange to have Apple evaluate it.
