iMac crashes during sleeep

I have a 7 year old iMac with the following specifications:

Retina 4K, 21.5 inch Display, 2017

Processor 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

Graphics Radeon Pro 560 4 GB

Memory 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

It has a 500 GB SSD Internal HDD

I have installed macOS Ventura 13.6.6

In the past few days I have had difficulty with my iMac not waking up from Sleep Mode, this happens infrequently and the longer the iMac has been sleeping the more likely that this will occur.

I have also had trouble starting the iMac with the Power Button, it can take several attempts to finally get it booted up and running.

When the iMac is in usage there are no noticeable problems.

I have tried using the following remedial measures:

Reset VRAM

Reset SMC/PMU

Unplugged ALL devices attached/connected to the iMac and unplugged the iMac from the power supply for 10 to 15 minutes before restarting with NOTHING connected to it at all.

I have run the Apple Diagnostics Tool, which did not find any hardware issues or other technical problems.

I have made a bootable installer USB Drive using macOS Ventura 13.6.6 and used this to completely erase my iMac and perform a fresh clean install of the operating system.

I left the iMac in its unmodified "virginal" state with no apps installed(only default macOS apps) and made absolutely ZERO changes to its configuration.

Yet despite doing all this my problems persist.

I fully know my iMac is getting long in the tooth at approximately 7 years of age.

If a repair or replacement of a component can be done at a reasonable cost, I would strongly consider that option as I would like to keep it alive for a while longer. My financial situation means I need more to time to save enough funds for a replacement.

I do hope this aging desktop iMac can be saved.

That is NOT what I wanted to hear, if an FREE in-store diagnosis and estimate reveals a repair cost of at least USD$300 or approximately AU$350 to AU$400.

Plus I am assuming the store will not perform the needed work, I would be advised to take to an Authorised Apple Repair Store which would most likely have higher rates and the cost would be considerably higher than that repair quote.

The estimated cost of AU$350 to AU$400 is close to the remaining funds I need for a brand new iMac.

I really do not wish to spend such a considerably large sum of money on an ageing iMac especially when I so close to able to get a brand new iMac.

I am still trying other measures, I have been advised on another forum to run EtreCheckPro and see what that reveals.

My iMac is fine while its running and because of the Sleep and Start Up issues, I am now highly reluctant to switch it off, I am so scared that I will never get it started again and it will die.

I will simply have to leave my iMac permanently on and only allow the screen to turn off and hope that it lasts for a while longer as I desperately scramble to accrue the remaining funds for a new iMac.

My only other source of internet access is by my iPhone, I don't what have to depend on that for a month or two.

That's not possible as I'm not prepared to travel over 10 miles on public transport with a quite heavy iMac and risk it being stolen.

I would then have to walk across an entire city to get to my nearest Apple Retail Store, whom would not perform the repair work. The iMac is a quite heavy device when you have to picket up and carry manually.

I would be told to find an Authorised Apple Repairer.

I prefer not to spend over AU$400 or more on an ageing 7 year old iMac.

Thanks for the etrecheck report... AMDFramebufferVIB::setPowerState... indicates the graphic card, but do you have any software that controls the display or such?

In Terminal run & report the output of this command..

pmset -g

Hi,

Please Note, the results of the Terminal Command you advised to run are obtained from my iMac which has its entire HD erased and a fresh copy of macOS Ventura 13.6.6 installed.

I checked or updates and there was only an update for Safari, which I allowed to be installed.

Apart from the update to Safari, Absolutely ZERO changes have been made to my iMacs configuration, my iMac is in a "Virginal" state.

I run the Terminal Command you advised me to perform with my iMac in this untouched "Virginal" state.

Here is the report:

Please note nothing has fixed my problems with my iMac crashing during sleep or the start up issues which involve multiple attempts to get it to finally start.

Everything was completely erased and clean install was done via a bootable USB installer drive.

Currently NOTHING has been altered except for an update to Safari.

The problems are still persisting despite my iMac being restored to a "Virginal" unaltered configuration.

I have tried your advice previously and it didn't help.

The EtreCheckPro results indicate a problem with the graphics, I have researched this on the internet and it is true that a failing graphics video card can cause all the problems I am experiencing.

However I'm awaiting further information from other posters whom looked at my EtreCheckPro results and are advising me. This software seems to have detected a problem missed by the Apple Diagnostics Tool.

I prefer to follow this line of investigation and see where it leads me.

How do I adjust the autopoweroffdelay setting and set hibernatemode to 3.

I am willing to try any workaround to keep this iMac alive a little longer, I'm not willing to spend over AU$400 on an ageing 7 year old iMac when I am so close to being able to afford a new one.

Apple stubbornly refuses to accept PayPal "Pay in 4" on hardware which would increase their sales of entry level iMacs.

I have tried all the advice given without success.

I know that my problems with my iMac only seem to occur during Sleep and Starting up.

A temporary solution which is working effectively is using the free Amphetamine app from the Apple App Store, it is configured to stop my iMac from sleeping indefinitely. I allow the iMac display to sleep after 5 minutes to reduce power consumption without any issues, but if needed Amphetamine can stop the display sleeping indefinitely.

I have also obtained phone quotes from at least 6 authorized Apple Repair Agents about the cost of replacing a failing video card. The minimum cost quoted was over AUD$600, that is an amount I am not prepared to spend on an ageing 7 year old iMac.

I pleaded my case to a few family members and a kind hearted relative is willing to loan me the remaining amount needed to cover the amount I need to get a new iMac, they know I am trustworthy and will soon get their money back.

They will be visiting next Wednesday and I will be able to order a new iMac when I see them, a day or so later all this stress will be behind me.
