Automatically forwarded emails deleted from both accounts

Hi,

For some time I have had an IMAP email which is installed on my iPhone and my desktop, and it is set to automatically forward all messages to my iCloud email (I do this so that I will get push notifications on my phone - the IMAP account will only give notifications when I open the mail app, which is a separate problem of its own).

My current and new problem though is that when I delete the forwarded email from my iCloud inbox, it also deletes from the IMAP account inbox. I have had this setup for years and never had this problem before. How can I prevent this sync from occurring where deleting emails from my iCloud inbox also deletes the email from my IMAP account?

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol):

  • Think of IMAP as a central filing cabinet. Your emails are stored on the server, like files in drawers. Forwarding an email is like making a copy and placing it in a different folder in the same cabinet (Account B).
  • Deleting an email from one account (drawer) doesn't affect the copy in the other (different drawer). Because both accounts access the same server storage, deleting on one account only removes that specific copy.

POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3):

  • Imagine POP3 as a physical mailbox with limited space. Emails are downloaded (collected from the mailbox) to your device. Forwarding is similar to taking an email out, making a photocopy (the forwarded email), and putting the original back (original email in Account A).
  • Deleting the original email on your device (Account A) is like throwing away the physical letter. The copy (forwarded email in Account B) remains unaffected, but the original is gone.

Here's the key difference:

  • With IMAP, emails are stored and managed on the server, allowing for independent access and deletion across devices.
  • POP3 downloads emails to your device, and deletion there removes the copy, potentially affecting other devices using POP3 for that account.

In simpler terms:

  • IMAP keeps a central copy, so deleting on one device doesn't affect others.
  • POP3 treats emails like physical copies; deleting one copy might affect others.

Choosing the right protocol:

  • If you access your email from multiple devices and want a consistent view with the ability to delete from any device, IMAP is generally recommended.
  • POP3 might be suitable if you primarily use one device and prefer to manage email storage locally.

SravanKrA - thanks for your reply, but this is not at all helpful - I do not think you read and understood my problem.

I understand the difference between IMAP and POP. This has nothing to do with that. I have two different email accounts: 1) a startlogic.com email, 2) an iCloud email. The Start Logic email forwards all emails to my iCloud email. The accounts are not connected in any way. I have the Start Logic email setup as IMAP on my iPhone, and of course my iCloud email is on my iPhone as well.

If on my iPhone I delete an email from my iCloud inbox that was forwarded from the Start Logic email, it also deletes from my Start Logic inbox. Note this is an iPhone problem: if I delete a forwarded email from my iCloud inbox in the browser-based version of iCloud mail, the email is not deleted from the Start Logic inbox.

Having the exact same problem. Two IMAP accounts - one for joint email and one for personal email. Messages to the joint email are forwarded to several personal accounts.

Set up like this so I can reply from the joint email when needed.

All good. Except an email filed in an IMAP folder on my personal account is deleted if I delete the original email Recieved on my joint account.

Which makes no sense, unless something is going on with message id's being the same (not exactly how that might work).
