Suddenly my mac started showing a folder icon with a question mark. I tried to follow the tutorial to recover using disk utility, but the system hard drive does not appear. I don't know how to proceed. Can someone help me?

Sounds like the drive has failed.
Probably more to say if only you mentioned what exact Mac is this...
