What to do when MacBook Pro startup shows a folder with a question mark icon?

i pushed a start up button, apple icon was showed and then folder with question mark icon stayed on a screen and that is it. i tried to start disk utility through mac boot service (cmd+r), but the system did not see my hard drive. please give me any advice?

View your Hard Drives in Terminal:

While in Terminal, see if they are seen:

  1. Go to: Utilities menu
  2. Select: Terminal
  3. What to Type:
cd /
cd Volumes
cd ls
