what does "audio handoff" mean?

I use hearing aids and there is something called “audio handoff” under hearing devices. It seems like when I’m using my iPad and there is audio I should be able to hear it through my hearing aids. I can hear things played by my phone.

I am able to hear one or the other (by turning one of them off), but if they are both on, I can't switch over to my iPad and listen to music through my hearing aids. Same for the iPhone. If my iPad is off and I get a call, I can hear through my hearing aids just fine, but, if my iPad is on and I'm listening to music (or video or whatever), I can't hear my iPhone calls through my hearing aid unless I turn the iPad off.

Apple SE and Oticon hearing aids I've successfully used Oticon hearing aids with my Apple Se for a couple of years. My question is regarding playing audio from the phone from a video or other source. Is there a way to switch output from hearing aids to the speaker? I can do it while on a phone call, there is an option, but I haven't found a way other than shutting off the hearing aids. Any suggestions appreciated.
