I am trying to post a long description for Apple users and Pages says my document is 4,975 characters with spaces and discussions.apple.come says it exceeds 5,000.
Does anyone know how this can happen?

The discussions.apple.com text editor has a 5000 character maximum. If there are characters in your pasted text that the discussions text editor dislikes, it will throw that 5000 character max on you without you actually reaching the 5000 character limit. That is when you use the Additional Text tool on the editor's toolbar, or review your text content for certain characters (like phone numbers, for instance).
If you are posting text that is actually code, then use the </> code insertion tool on the discussions editor toolbar which usually masks illegal programming code symbols from the editor. Enter a final return, and click the </> again to turn it off.

Those examples could be the issue, or any invisible Pages formatting codes. I can post a brief snippet of HTML/CSS or even plain text containing a phone number, and the hosting software will instantly flag the content as having exceeded 5000 characters. Been this aggravating way for years…
Pages generated nothing but text. unless something like X.2 and X.0 and 60 Hz.
