What is the error message you receive when attempting to add a payment method?

If you’ve tried to add the card more than 5 times, your bank or the payment network (MasterCard, Visa etc.) may have a hold on adding any accounts to your iPhone. Frequent attempts are a sign of potential fraudulent use. Apple can’t impose a freeze, but that information is communicated to the issuing bank and payment network. This can delay adding your payment account information for 24 hours or longer.

  • “When you add a card to Apple Pay, card-related information, location, and information about device settings and use patterns may be sent to Apple to determine eligibility.
  • Some of the above information, account-related information, and paired-device details may be shared with your card issuer or bank to determine eligibility and for anti-fraud purposes.”

Adding Cards to Apple Pay

When you are adding a payment card like store, credit, debit, and prepaid cards to Apple Pay, information you provide about your card, and whether certain device settings are enabled may be sent to Apple in order to determine your eligibility to enable Apple Pay. Your device may also evaluate device use patterns (for example, percent of time device is in motion, approximate number of calls per week) to help identify fraud. The information evaluated by your device is not shared with Apple in a way that can be linked to you.

Information may also be provided by Apple to your card issuer, payment network, or any providers authorized by your card issuer to enable Apple Pay, in order to determine the eligibility of your card, to set up your card with Apple Pay, and to prevent fraud, including:

  • Your credit, debit, or prepaid card number
  • The name and billing address associated with your Apple ID, iTunes, or App Store account
  • General information about your Apple ID, iTunes, and App Store account activity (for example, whether you have a long history of transactions within iTunes)
  • Information about your device and, if using Apple Watch, the paired iOS device (for example, a device identifier, phone number, and the name and model, for both your Apple Watch and paired iOS device)
  • Location at the time you add your card (if you have Location Services enabled)
  • Account or device history of adding payment cards
  • Aggregated stats relating to the information from payment cards you’ve added or attempted to add to Apple Pay“

You’re welcome. You have to understand that verification process doesn’t really start until you agree to the Terms & Conditions. The CVV number is not given to the bank and payment network until the T&C is agreed to. If the CVV matches, verification process starts.

If you repeat the process more than 5 times, whether you or at the bank’s direction initiate the process, it almost inevitably denied for at least 24 hours after the last attempt. There are posts where people state they had to wait over several weeks.

In my experience it’s the payment network that is blocking the attempts in most cases. I’m going to post a diagram the roughly explains adding a payment method to you Apple Wallet.

This diagram shows the path that data flows to add a payment method. If the Token Service Provider (almost always the payment network) doesn’t verify, then card can’t be added. Banks and payment networks don’t interfere with each other’s verification. It works as checks and balances to reduce fraud.

I’m more than happy to run through troubleshooting steps. One of the steps is to have Apple Support do remote diagnostics on your iPhone in the off chance it’s an NFC hardware issue. Once you’re on the phone with Apple Support they can run through troubleshooting too.

Just understand, that if Apple Support can’t resolve this issue, every attempt you make just starts the timer over.

Thanks for the comprehensive response.

But I don’t think this is the case. I finish the steps and instructions and even sign the terms and conditions as Agree but then in the last step it says: Card not added

Contact your card issuer! Which I did yesterday and they tried multiple times in different ways… besides, scanning the support community, I have noticed it is the problem for many other users!

I just entered one of the numbers in my card number incorrectly and then I amended it but it didn’t accept my second try and third one… then I contacted my bank for that and did their instructions… so it was not too many tries I would say … But even you are mentioning the right reason, so what would be the solution? What’s next step? Is it like I cannot never add my card to Apple Pay because of one mistake?

Because at the end of the day, apple claims that they are not the one who made s restricting the Card and we should contact our bank which I already did and they advised me that there is no restriction from their side! It really looks a vicious cycle!!! Can you advise me regarding the solution?
