Up until two or three days ago, if I needed to rename a PDF file that was open, I simply clicked on the name of the file. The full name was highlighted, I began typing, and voila, the file was renamed. This no longer works. WHY??
I have made zero updates or changes to my computer or any software. This is a disaster as due to my work, I am constantly renaming open files.
I am running MacOS 10.15.7. My Preview is 11.0

It's working fine here which raised the notion that something else on your machine is interfering. Switch to another user account. Does the issue persist? How about after a restart in Safe Mode?

Have you restarted your Mac?
Is It specific to PDFs? Can you rename, say, a Jpeg?
Any chance the pdf has been locked?
Thank you for all your suggestions. It is all of a sudden working again. I know I need to update my OS, and I'm sure that is part of it, but I use one program in my business that is not yet compatible with Sonoma, so I have held off. If there was some way to upgrade to a more recent OS, but not Sonoma, I would.

Yes. It only affects the Preview PDF. Pages and Numbers documents are unaffected.
Just PDFs.
No, none of them are locked.
