I see that this problem has gone on for a few years. My Apple TV will black out for a second or so then continue. A couple of times before if I would go back a couple of minutes it would be ok. But then tonight it went out at least 12 times during a program. Nothing has changed. Why does this happen? It’s frustrating to say the least.

If it isn’t the HDMI cable losing signal, then please check if these blackouts coincides with content changes (e.g. ad blocks). Some TVs need a moment to adjust for changes in the HDMI signal regarding frame rate and/or dynamic range. Higher end modern TVs may support QMS (Quick Media Switching) and thereby support unnoticeably fast adjustments. For other TVs, you may want to consider turning off the Match Content options on Apple TV box in Settings﹥Video and Audio﹥. A continuous same frame rate and same dynamic range in the HDMI signal wouldn’t need the mentioned adjustments.

Replace the HDMI cable with new, preferably 3’ (1m) or less.
This is about the box that is connected to my tv. The blackout doesn't happen all the time. But last night blacked out too many times. I have also unplugged the box then plugged back in again. My box is about 5 yrs old.
Is this about the Apple TV app on your smart TV, or about the Apple TV app on the Apple TV box connected to a TV?
