A notification continuously pops up to reset my passcode but does not allow me to do so with number only... And when trying to just completely turn off the passcode requirement it does not allow me. My previous passcode was only a 6-digit number not it is requiring me to use words.

While the iPad may be your own, in using it for school (presumably using the school's WiFi network and resources), the iPad may be enrolled in - and "supervised" by - the School's device management system.
Look for an installed management profile in your iPad settings:
Settings > General > VPN & Device Management
If you see a management profile, you'll need to seek help from your School Administrator.

Is the iPad centrally managed by an Enterprise/Business or an Educational establishment? If so, there may be a management policy applied that (a) requires periodic change of your device Passcode, and (b) mandates that you use a alpha-numeric Passcode.
If your iPad is centrally managed, you may need to seek assistance from the System Administrator that manages your iPad.
You may have to select to use different password methods and then select numeric password only. It will allow you to then use numbers only.
It is my personal iPad that I use for school. It is not allowing me to change the passcode or anything to something that only contains numbers.
