Weather Channel app not rotating on new iPad Pro Gen 6

Some explanation may be useful...

To switch between Portrait and Landscape view, you generally only need to rotate the iPad to the desired screen orientation.

For newer models of iPad without a side-switch, such as your iPad Pro, you may need to disable your Screen Rotation Lock. To do so, you need to access the Control Centre; swipe downwards from the top-right corner of the screen - then tap the Screen Rotation lock icon:

If screen rotation proves to be problem with some Apps - and not others - you need to be aware that not all Apps are coded to operate in both Portrait and Landscape screen modes. Apps that have a fixed screen orientation may appear in the orientation determined by the App Developer.

For compatible Apps that are intended for iPhone, iPadOS 15/16/17 will automatically rotate the App to display in Landscape screen orientation. There is no manual configuration or setting to enable this feature.

However, Apps designed for iPad that are expressly coded to force Portrait screen orientation, iPadOS 15/16/17 will honour the intended Portrait mode - and will not override the App coding.

For iPadOS 16/17, there is a workaround for Apps that only nominally display in portrait...

As your iPad Pro supports Stage Manager, portrait Apps can be displayed with the iPad in Landscape orientation:

Settings > Home Screen & Multitasking > Stage Manager > Use Stage Manager on iPad - set to ON

With the iPad in Landscape orientation and Stage Manager enabled, Apps are displayed within their own resizable App window. Portrait Apps are displayed in a corresponding window.

Hopefully you now have a good understanding of how different types of Apps may be displayed in various circumstances - and are now better able to use the advanced features of your iPad Pro to manipulate how App windows are displayed.

I just got a new iPad mini 6 and am frustrated as well with the updated TWC app in landscape. I plan to send feedback to the app developers; in the meantime I have loaded the webpage as a bookmark under my browser on my iPad to use in portrait mode.

The Apple provided Weather app or Windy are both good alternatives as well.

As I’ve said, that has been my experience for years. Apparently you have had (and currently have) a different experience. I don’t know why.

As I said above, not mine! (I have an iPad Pro 4th generation 11” running iPadOS 17.4.1.)

The Weather Channel has not ever worked in portrait mode on my previous 11” iPad Pro models either.

Even if you’re not a FOX fan, download their free weather app. It does everything the weather channel app does and you can view it in portrait mode.

I don’t like the fact that The Weather Channel isn’t in Portrait mode anymore. I have spent hours trying to fix it.

will use other weather apps until they change it back. Also I had no notification that they were changing.

Why wait until we have a hurricane/storm when everyone is watching the weather to make a change!

Bad, bad, and bad!

I dont like the landscape only function. I rarely use my ipad in that mode, so this new “feature” is not one i support. Going to use a different app-until this is changed.

I just checked The Weather Channel in the App Store on my iPad (iPad Pro 11” 4th gen, iPadOS 17.4.1). Note the dramatic difference (portrait vs. landscape) between the iPhone and iPad Preview rows.

Might a Weather Channel subscription be involved? I do not subscribe.

I have an iPad Pro (3rd gen) running iOS 17.5.1, & it just recently updated my weather channel app. I can only see it in landscape mode. Phone which is an 11 Pro Max also updated & it is fine. I have used weather channel (premium) for a number of years - our main weather radio actually,- & I had no issues with it. However, I am just not crazy about new look & info provided - especially radar (6 hours & jump to 24 hours???). Now, I learn on here I can’t change view on my iPad from landscape. What a bunch of B.S? I will be submitting my review along with a good-bye to the weather channel app. Thanks everyone for the info!
