Weather Channel app not rotating on new iPad Pro Gen 6

I gave my daughter my 11” Gen 4 iPad Pro which worked fine with the weather channel app. I purchased the newest 12.9” pro which is basically the same tablet just larger. They both have the upgraded memory and 2TB. Weather Channel does not rotate on the 12.9. That just doesn’t seem to make sense/ I’ve checked all the usual suspect issues but everything seems fine. I actually set up the new tablet using my latest backup so everything seems to be still set up the way I like it.

Any ideas? Don’t be shy. I’m pretty puzzled myself. I do like the new iPad though…Al

I just got this from The Weather Channel Support:

Hi!

Thank you for reaching out with this feedback about your impressions of the new iPad app.

At this time, the new app design only supports landscape mode on iPad. We made this decision to lean into a more immersive and contextual radar experience that allows you to multitask when using the app. I will pass your feedback about portrait mode on to the relevant teams working on making improvements to the new experience.

We have more exciting map layer enhancements planned so we hope you'll stick with us and give the new experience a chance.

Please let me know if you have additional comments. Thank you!

I was checking out the Weather Channel app. this morning on my daughters hand me down (my former Gen 4 11in) as I have every morning for years in non-landscape mode or whatever it is called. I just got a new 12.9 iPad Pro so my daughter can use my 11 at school to take finals. I rarely watched it in landscape mode ever on a series of different year model iPads over the last 15 years . I am surprised the new 12.9 isn’t rotating the app., especially since the new iPad is just a big twin of her 11. They are both 2TB systems running on M2’s with iOS 17.4.1. I basically downloaded the most recent backup to the new one so they should work the same way I would think 🤔

I tried it LP, ad thank you , and I see where it would be useful for multitasking but remember I have had another iPad running on exactly the same data and apps (I literally downloaded my most recent backup from the 11 to the 12.9 for the initial setup. I thought it should run pretty much seamlessly but alas…it’s not an issue because I obviously can easily rotate the iPad. It just seems strange that they’ve slowly been reprogramming a lot of apps for rotation enabled purposes. Also, yes I am subscribed to the Wx website.

Ugh. That is a ridiculous and arrogant response from TWC. Sounds like our worst chatGPT nightmare. These programmers decided to change the display for a more ‘immersive’ experience that allows ‘multitasking’? Seriously? Is this heavy-handed corporate control a company policy, or simply the endgame of how programmers are being taught in CS these days?

Let the consumer decide how they want to view content, please. for now, I will find less ‘immersive’ and heavy-handed apps to get my weather.

thank you TexProf for sharing!

I understand and I’m sorry to hear of your disability. This all came about because I had surgery and it went bad leaving me bedridden for the next few months, at least. My wife and kids went together on a new 12.9 m2 iPad. (I knew better than to point out that the new 14” gen 7 m4 came out 24 hours later and why didn’t they wait or why didn’t Apple tell them about the new release?) Anyway, when I set it up I noticed it wasn’t rotating. I have it mounted in a fantastic floor weighted Levo iPad stand and it rotates but I don’t think it was meant to rotate several times a day. So that’s what started this…me being stuck in bed with a brand new iPad Pro growling at the weather channel. They did at least increase the font size and the width of the right side strip.

Yep, it used to be easy to glance at the old app and get a good idea of what the weather would be like for that day and maybe a click to see the week. Heck, if you look at my last picture you can see the radar button right there. That’s what I want out of my weather experience. I want weather and news on top and I can click on radar. It’s summer in Texas. I don’t live on the coast and I don’t need to see 2/3 of a non rotating screen covered in radar images. I like watching weather forecasts but not that much. The least they could do is make it true split screen and let us choose our layout.
