Cannot add Amex card to Apple Pay because verification email takes too long to arrive

I have added an American Express card to Apple Pay, and added all the numbers correctly, though I had to add the expiration date manually since it scanned about a decade off what was printed on the card. I read somewhere that these security codes have a 10 minute expiration, but every time I've requested a code, it takes at least two hours to arrive in my inbox.

Apple is not a bank. Apple cannot verify a credit/debit card that doesn’t belong to them. Only the bank that issued the card can verify you and your iPhone as the owners. If the verification code is taking longer than expected, please call American Express support team using the phone number on the back of the card.
