Apple Watch Workout always pauses despite turning off Auto-Pause

I just bought a Apple Watch Series 9 GPS, hoping for an improved workout experience. But no matter what I do, my workout starts pausing randomly and repeatedly. Sometimes I just restart my workout to temporarily end the cycle.

I usually use the functional training category and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I turned off Auto-Pause too.

Does anyone know what the deal is here? It's very offputting and I'm close to returning this watch 😭

Ok I’ve solved my issue so I’ll share in case anyone found this as frustrating as me 😂

Sure I restarted my Apple Watch but that didn’t resolve it. I have tattoos on the wrist that I was wearing my watch and Reddit revealed that this might be why the sensor is messing up. I changed to wearing it on my other wrist with no tattoos and I was able to have an hour+ workout without it pausing.

Hope that helps!

This issue is one of 2 (main issues) I get on a daily bases with my AW9. The other main issue is that the watch marks segments for no apparent reason. I opened a support call with Apple & sent the watch in to them & it came back NFF, needless to say I had issues from my next outdoor walk workout. I believe the issues I am having are related to my long sleeve workout synthetic shirts & the AW9 touch screen being too sensitive during workout sessions. I have been working through a diagnostic process & now have come to the conclusion I just mentioned, mainly because I am now currently wearing/testing with a different type of shirt/top & I haven’t had any problems with this change of shirt for 4 days now. I have not got back to Apple yet as I haven’t concluded my testing. I wear long sleeve tee/polos as sun & wind protection for sessions that are typically 1.5 hours long. I have also found that WHEN putting the watch in “Water Lock” mode I don’t get the issues, however I don’t believe this is a viable solution. Also during the time the watch was with Apple support , I used my old 1st generation Apple Watch SE to record my workouts & it worked perfectly with my long sleeve synthetic workout shirt.
