Ringtone behaviour on iPhone 13
My iphone 13 sometimes ring once and went to become silent when the screen is facing downward.

Placing your iPhone face down can have a couple of effects depending on the model you have:
- Screen Off with Notifications: iPhones 5s and later (except iPhone SE 2nd generation, iPhone 8, and iPhone X) have a feature called facedown detection. When enabled (which is the default setting), the screen will turn off and not light up for notifications when you place your phone face down on a surface [1]. This helps to conserve battery and avoid accidental screen touches.
- No Effect: iPhone SE 2nd generation, iPhone 8, iPhone X and later models don't use facedown detection to turn off the screen for notifications.
However, some of the newer models may have other features like "Always On Display" which can be controlled in Settings to manage how the screen behaves.
