Yahoo App password…

Generate and manage third-party app passwords

Some older, third-party email apps (that do not use our Yahoo branded sign in page) require you to enter a single password for login credentials. To access your Yahoo Mail account on these apps, you'll need to generate and use an app password. An app password is a long, randomly generated code that gives a non-Yahoo app permission to access your Yahoo account. You’ll only need to provide this code once to sign in to your third-party email app.

Most likely biggest factor is using Other in Mail setup, then using a Browser that doesn’t have Yahoo PW stored init to get the App PW.

Okay I got it to work. Go to Yahoo security and generate the password. Copy it. Go back to Mail and create generic account using Cox address with user name with cox.net suffix. Paste in generated password. Sign in will fail but it will show the incoming and outgoing server settings. They will be the Cox servers since you had the cox.net suffix in your email address. Manually change those to Yahoo server settings: imap.mail.yahoo.com and smtp.mail.yahoo.com. As soon as you do that the blue Save button will come on to save those. Hit Save and email will appear instantaneously in Mail. The other settings were the same as Cox used. Use this paste in password (write it down) for any other Mac computers (laptops) using Mail. Set them up like you set up the first computer.

Use the password you created manually when you first set up your Yahoo account to setup the Yahoo interface for iPhones and iPads. Use that password when signing into Yahoo on the internet. If you want to change your password, only change the one you originally created for your Yahoo account. That should leave the pasted in password for Mail on the computer(s) unchanged (says Yahoo, I'm too chicken to try it after spending 3 days tracking this down).
