iPhone keypad does not work during calls, e.g. for telephone banking - SOLVED

Some telephone banking and other automated systems such as for two-factor identification call you and may ask you to press a key, e.g. star. You open the Phone app and select the keypad at the bottom. You press the key. Nothing happens. The automated call system continues; it may ask you to press a key again.

By default the iPhone does not send the keypress. To fix it do this:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Phone.
  3. Select Incoming Calls.
  4. Change the option from Banner to Full Screen.

Done.

There are many questions in this community which are solved by this. In this case it worked for an incoming call. It likely works for an outgoing call too. You do not need to restart the iPhone. This solution worked first time with an iPhone 13 Mini running iOS 17.4.1. I suspect it will work with other versions, as hinted at by a comment in another question in this community. Try this before updating your iPhone.

If this works for you, please reply and confirm. If not, please give details which will help us reach a solution.
