New iPad Apple with ID conflicts

My new 9th generation iPad (recently activated from an older iPad) keeps prompting me for a password associated with a long unused Apple ID. Password unknown. Should I use “forgot password”, Log in, then Log out, before logging back in my current ID and password?

There's probably some content in the backup that belongs to the iPad, yes, you would need to attempt to reset the password and log in to it to complete the process.

If the linked content are apps, you will then need to find them and delete them from the iPad, there won't be an option anywhere to log out of the Apple ID in this case, but the apps would remain tied to it and require it to download again and update in the future.
