Depending on what the phone hits, it can break from a much shorter fall than five feet. I've dropped phones hundreds of times with no damage and then, one day, my phone slipped out of my hand as I was trying to put it into my coat pocket. It hit the pavement less than three feet down. Smashed the entire screen. I suspect there was a small rock that the screen hit first. Oh, and I did have a case. Screen protectors help but, they are not 100% either.

Have the budget for a replacement?

Have at! Dunk it, drop it, lose it, whatever.

Don’t have the budget?

Get a case. Particularly given your plans for dropping this iPhone, get a rugged case.

Will that rugged case — or any case — prevent any chance of damage? No.

Any drop can potentially crack your screen even when using a case. The case will offer better protection, but is no guarantee. Some people say that the iPhone can slide out of your hand easier without a case, so drops may be prevented if you find this to be true and the case may be useful in that scenario. The choice is yours.
