Apple Pay "Card Not Added" error only for iPhone

Hello,

I try to add my card to Apple Pay on iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 Pro Max. I am getting error "Card Not Added contact your issuer for more information".

The strange thing is I could add my card to Mac & Apple Watch as well as my old iPhone 6s. The problem is only happening with 14 and 13 models (Both are using iOS 17.4.1). The issue is happening with only one bank and I can add some other cards from other places. I have two cards from that bank and one of them is already in 13 pro max and but I cannot add to 14 (I was using there as well but after erasing all and getting back from cloud it started to give error). I cannot add my new card to both 13 and 14.

Some solutions that I tried:

  • Force restart
  • Erase everything and setup again from iCloud (my card is added to cloud since I can use it on watch and Mac)
  • I tried to add from Bank's app, manually, previous card sections. All are the same error.
  • Sign out and sign in (Both with different Apple IDs and same Apple ID)
  • Change region and get back to same region (it's the same as bank region)
  • Reset settings

I would be appreciate if someone can find solution or suggest a fix.

Thank you for your replies in advance.

The problem is solved!

So, I have two sim card in my phone. The bank approved one was esim as a second card. I changed bank approved number to my main sim and it started to work.

I don’t know if the bank system somehow refreshed when I changed the number in the system or it really checks only my main SIM.

Thanks you all who replied and tried to help!

That’s the first error that needs to be cleared. Trying to add the card too many times in a short period of time will effectively freeze the card from being added for a period of time. Everything we try now will just prolong the freeze.

The fact that it’s just one bank and that other cards have been added to the phones eliminates a hardware issue. If it were hardware (iPhone) issue, no cards could be added. Theoretically, it could still be a software issue, but again, unlikely because other cards have been added to the iPhones.

The device may have too many tokens assigned to it. Erasing the iPhone doesn’t necessarily erase the tokens.

Have you talked to the bank that issued the cards? If so, what have they said?

In the interim, you can talk to the bank and ask about the possible/probable token issue and see if they see any tokens and how many on the account. It’s also possible that the bank has turned over this aspect to a third party such as the payment network (Mastercard, Visa etc.). This complicates the issue. The likelihood it’s the payment network blocking the card. Your freeze was the repeated attempts trying to get around the block the payment network had because of a token issue.

This is just an educated guess. But I’ve seen this many times and patience is a part of the cure.

Just for updating. The bank got back to me with a simple solution double check and re-try. Only one thing is new and that is disable and enable the contactless function for the card (which didn’t help). I asked them to escalate it to IT team and if they can see detailed error message on their side but let’s see what they’ll say.

The strange thing is that the card is a newly issued card and I didn’t try to add any new card during the last six months m. Also, I have chance to try on 5 different devices (Mac, Watch and 3 iPhones) with same apple id. 6s (old phone) is working without an issue 13 (personal) and 14 (work phone ) creates the issue. That’s why I am doubtful about the waiting but that’s the only thing I can do unless the bank gives me a clear explanation.

Hi tried to talk in a branch but they said delete the all cards, reinstall the bank application and try again which did not helped. I wrote also in the bank message and I hope they can give some more information there or create an IT ticket.

Can please explain the tokens more?

If card freeze happened, I couldn't add to my watch or Mac afterwards isn't it? Because that's not the case, I could remove and add them again.
