Reader view does not work

I have recently bought a new MacBook Air with M3 chip.

The reader view in Safari does not work. I searched for a solution in settings with no success.

MacBook Air 15″, macOS 14.4

Hi vezeridis!

Reader View in Safari is not available on all websites. To test if this is your computer or simply the site, attempt to visit them on another device and turn on reader mode there. To turn it on in Safari on Mac, hover over the URL bar and select the page icon:

Site without reader view compatibility (Add to Bookmarks icon shown):

Most Wikipedia articles support reader view, if you'd like to test.

Hello vezeridis!

While this is uncommon, it does seem to be a known issue. If the shortcut ⇧+⌘+R doesn't work, there are three options I can suggest:

Option One:

Check if there are any Safari extensions are installed by going to Safari → Safari Extensions. If there are, uninstall them and attempt reader mode again.

Option Two:

Save your information to iCloud, an external drive, or via Time Machine and perform a factory reset on your Mac by going to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings and follow the prompts.

Option Two:

Note that this should be a last resort option and may not have the desired effects. Make sure you back up your computer before deleting or removing system app files.

  1. Open your Safari container (~/Library/Containers/Safari)
  2. Copy the contents to a safe folder
  3. Relaunch Safari
  4. If reader view is working, paste the old contents that you copied to a safe place in step 2. Replace where necessary.
  5. Test if reader view is working.
