Photos on MAC pro won't import from iPhone

Both devices are up to date. iPhone is connected with supplied cable. Photo says preparing to import, but then nothing happens. I have never had issues importing before. Incidentally, I can't seem to connect iPhone to Mac by bluetooth either. They just won't connect, but they will pair.

There's your problem. ExFAT does not support having a Photos library on it. It may work for a while but eventually will crash the library. Copy the library to a properly formatted volume, reformat the drive and copy the library back.

Did you ever get this notification when plugging in your iPhone to your Mac Pro?

I get one after every system update and go ahead and install. I tried once to not install and see if it could connect the iPhone and it did. However, I didn't try to sync which might be what the software update is for.

Also the iPhone can't connect to your Mac via BlueTooth. It's not designed to. It's WiFi that it connects with.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Thank you. I have my Photos system library on an external drive. I have never had any issues before and have been importing my photos to this drive regularly up until January 2024 (which is my most recent upload). Today, it would not import, but I was able to import to the Photos library on my hard drive. This makes me wonder if the external disk has a problem. We have had power flashes where I live and I suspect that the multiple connects and disconnects have damaged the external drive that I store my photos on. I realize now that I should not have left it plugged in. I have a separate external drive for my automatic backups using Time Machine. That one doesn't seem to have any issues and I normally keep it plugged in as well. Maybe it's a better quality external hard drive.

I don't recall the format, but I did set it up correctly when I first got it and have used it regularly since then, so I doubt that would be an issue now. Reformatting the disk would cause me to lose the photos that are on it, right? I wouldn't want to do that. I can still access the photo library, I just can't get the current photos to import to it from my phone. Is there a way to see if the drive is corrupt? I'm not getting any error message, just nothing happens when I click the button to import.
