Bent iPad - could heat cause this?

Our iPad is bent in between the two speakers, an area where the iPad gets warm to hot. Having read through support issues, I find Apple and fan boi responses a bit misleading, tone deaf, and irresponsible. We don't use the iPad in any context where it could be sat on or bent in the one spot, directly in the center between the two speakers, exactly where it gets the hottest. It sits on a desk or we use it at the kitchen table. That's it.

Apple and fan bois seem to suggest iPad owners must have done something, because the case can't bend on its own. Look, if an iPad case can be bent back again by heating it with a hair dryer that doesn't feel as hot as the iPad case gets on its own, then yes, maybe it's a defective iPad and heat caused the problem.

Shouldn't Apple cover this if there is a problem, and shouldn't they be more responsible in doing problem determination?

What is the fix if any? It's still kinda usable but it isn't great.

Apple and fan bois…

Hmm, you sure know how to make your fellow users want to help you. 🙄

You say it only sits on a desk or table? Then, just how would it bend when on a flat surface?

Aluminum has a relatively low melting point of 1218 F (659 C). When alloying metals are added to aluminum, its melting point can range widely from around 848 F to 1230 F (453 C to 666 C).

The iPad 4 mini has this as part of its specs:

  • Operating ambient temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
  • Non-operating temperature: -4° to 113° F (-20° to 45° C)

So, nowhere near the temperature needed to melt, or even cause the material to sag. You wouldn't even be able to hold the iPad if it got that hot.

The iPad will also automatically shut down if the CPU temperature exceeds 113° F to prevent damage to the device. Again, not even close to the heat necessary to cause the case to bend without additional force applied. You will also see a message that the device needs to cool down before you can use it again.
