Pair iPhone 14 17.4.1 to a brand new M3 MacBook Air Sonoma 14.4.1

I'm trying to pair my new MacBook Air runningSonoma 14.4.1 to my iPhone 14, 17.4.1. Bluetooth is enabled on both. My bluetooth mouse works with the Mac and my AirPods work on both.

The Mac doesn't see the iPhone in Bluetooth Settings. The phone shows the Mac, but either times out or says the Mac isn't compatible when I try to connect.

I've seen other posts about similar issues with older equipment in this forum but so far haven't found a solution.

What am I doing. Wrong?

Bluetooth pairing an iPhone or iPad and a Mac is not supported.

If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity or AirDrop, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other. The following may help with Handoff/Continuity issues: Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch - Apple Support

If you're trying to use an iPhone in connection with a Mac, there are several ways to do it. You may wind up using a combination of things.

  • Using iCloud synchronization
  • Using Continuity features
  • Using subscription services like Apple Music and Apple Arcade that support multiple platforms
  • Using e-mail accounts (with IMAP connections, instead of POP3 ones, so master copies of mail live on the e-mail server). (This might involve not just e-mail, but associated contacts, calendars, and notes.)
  • Using manual synchronization where the Mac loads content onto the iPhone. (E.g., to load music from your CDs onto your iPhone)

I was trying to use my iPhone as a security key to log into my Google account. The Google error message said to pair the phone with the Mac, sending me down this rabbit hole.

I gave up and logged into Google with my username and password, but it still seems odd that the MacBook Air shows up in the iPhone's Bluetooth setup if connecting an iPhone to a Mac isn't supported.

The other question is, why the H E double hockey sticks not? (Really? The word h**l is being auto-censored?)

In the last few days several things that have been working fine have just stopped working, causing me to have to do a lot of troubleshooting to do things that just worked before. Frustrating as um, Hades, and I used to do Tech Support for a living.

But my immediate need has been met, so we can close this out.
