My husband and I are trying to link our phones under one Apple ID with our separate numbers. But we don’t know how to get it to where we can text the other iPhone without it popping up as our own contact. We have people who use it like that so we know we can we just don’t know how to receive a text from other iPhone number while under same Apple ID

You can try to go to Settings > Contacts > My Info, and choose your name as your Contact on each device. This won't stop each device from sharing Call Logs and Voicemails, which is why it is recommended to have each family member use their own Apple ID.
Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID - Apple Support

Why are you trying to do that? It's almost never the best option. If you explain what it is you're trying to accomplish by doing that, someone will probably be able to give you a better suggestion.
This Is not possible. Apple ID's are personal and not meant to be shared. It is better to use 2 Apple ID's and after set up family sharing between them
