Brother printer connection "Filter Failed" message

Trying to print from a Macbook Air running Sonoma 14.3, to a Brother MFC printer model L2700DW. Gave up on wireless, and bought a USB-to-Macbook cable today. My document does show in the printer, but I get an error "Filter Failed" in Safari, Chrome, and Preview.

Help!

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 14.3

OK so I just got a new MAC Mini and transferred everything over from an iMAC Pro, which is being retired and sold. I tried printing with my old trusty Brother HL-2270DW and got the "Stopped - Filter Failed" message. Did some research and saw some really egghead type posts that talked about deleting files in the root directory and even provided new code to install. Yeah - no way man, that is a highway to making things worse - at least for me.

So here's what i did an it works perfectly again - although I am using a USB cable.

1) First, I went to Brother and Downloaded (but did not install right away) the original printer driver. Note - the latest driver was for MacOS 10.15, my new MAC-Mini is Sonoma 14.5, but I was like "whatever, let's give it a shot".

2) Then I went to System Settings => Printers & Scanners => Clicked on the Printer => Remove Printer.

3) Backed out of Settings and reinstalled the 2270 Driver.

4) Then I went back into System Settings => Printers & Scanners => Made sure all the properties were the way I wanted.

That's it! Works fine again over USB.

In terms of printing over WiFi. I use Brothers iPrint&Scan App on my iPad - and prior to the new Mac-Mini it also worked perfectly over WiFi. but now it doesn't, so there is still a Network handshake issue to figure out, but now that it is working through the Mac-Mini, I'm not too worried.

Hello Benster123,

Thank you for confirming that a macOS 10.15 Catalina driver can be used with a Brother HL-2270DW and macOS Sonoma 14.5 via USB.

I guess that the driver that you downloaded is the 09/27/2019 (1.5.0) at https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hl2270dw_all&os=10060. It may be of interest to the OP that this appears to be the same printer driver as the one at https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcl2700dw_us_eu_as&os=10060 for the Brother MFC-L2700DW.

Hi,

The Brother MFC-L2700DW is a model supporting Apple's AirPrint technology:

About AirPrint - Apple Support

Brother recommends using AirPrint for this model:

https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcl2700dw_us_eu_as&os=10080

AirPrint compatibility means that the printer should work without additional software or printer drivers, provided that the printer and the Mac computer are connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router). Please note that an AirPrint network connection can be wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet). This means that you could choose to wire the printer to one of the LAN ports of the router (instead of using Wi-Fi), if you so wish. Ethernet may be more stable, and some of the wireless connection difficulties may be avoided. So, AirPrint might be worth another try.

Also, make sure that the printer has been updated to the latest firmware version:

https://support.brother.com/g/b/producttop.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcl2700dw_us_eu_as

For a USB connection, one would normally need drivers from the manufacturer.

A scanner driver is available for up to macOS 14 Sonoma.

However, a printer driver does not appear to exist for anything later than macOS 10.15 Catalina:

https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcl2700dw_us_eu_as&os=10060

A Catalina printer driver may or may not work with a few newer operating system versions, but that would be entirely experimental.
