My iPad Pro not charging after updating

I updated my IPad 3rd gen to 17.5 and now it won't charge. I have tried different chargers and cords. Anyone having the same issue?

Begin with a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

Otherwise, these support pages should help with troubleshooting battery and charging issues:

If your iPad won't charge – Apple Support

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W (i.e., 2.4A @5V) or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters (1.0A @5V) intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow. Recent models of iPad are supplied with a 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Some third-party USB-C power adapters (and portable PowerBanks) may not support USB PD (Power Delivery). Power Delivery mutually negotiates the charging voltage; the source, load and cable are all elements involved in the negotiation protocol. Unless the Power Adapter explicitly supports USB PD, it will almost certainly fail to charge the iPad; proprietary charging standards, such as QC (Quick Charge), are not supported.

Many computer USB ports also cannot source sufficient power to charge an iPad. Unless explicitly designed for charging connected devices, computer USB ports are typically limited to 0.5-1A @5V (i.e., 2.5-5.0W).

If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad, Power Adapter and cable(s):

I'm chiming back in - my problem go solved ... as it does every 6-12 months...

Yeah, every 6- 12 months I have this problem (not charging suddenly) and I frantically search the web, reddit amd apple forums for solutions - only to get the typical "clean the USB port", change your charger, reboot, delete apps etc. Or concluding that it needs some sort of expensive repair.

Nope.

Just wait it out. It was the ios update. Happens every 6-12 months.

Some update happens iin the middle of the night (or whenever) ...

I forget about it ...

Then my Ipad stops charging, no matter what USB cord, connection, charger, battery.

Then .. after about a day or so (sometimes a little longer) - seemingly after the update "settles" and is truly downloaded and installed and propagated ...

Magically - the ipad start charging ... everything work (all usb cords, chargers, batteries etc)

And all is right with the world.

Happens more-than-periodically, and always after a big update.

Just wait it out.

My IPad is not locked but still will not charge. What do I do?

There is no connection between locked or not locked and charging; it should charge either way. But what model iPad, and have you tried different power sources, different cables, and, if your model has a Lightning port, have you tried cleaning it with a bright light and a toothpick?

Same issue.. iPad 10.5 pro running iPad OS 17.5.1.. Shows as charging but continues to drop level no matter which Apple charger and cable I use.

I did the forced reset twice before it started charging with my Apple fast charger but it seems slow to change.

Constant WIFI connection issues as well even after forgetting network and resetting network settings..

iOS 17 has been an utter nightmare and I’d love to know if I can go back to iOS 16 and not have any issues in device communication between the iPad and my iPhone 14 Pro Max? Frustrating

This situation is just bizarre. It seems to randomly decide to charge and randomly decide not to. Cable manufacturer or brick manufacturer doesn’t seem to matter with the inconsistency. I am able to charge eventually after much effort usually so I’m not dead in the water like others.

It sounds as if it's time to have Apple evaluate your hardware.

Same here. Two days ago my iPad Pro 12.9” (4th Gen) stopped charging with official Apple cables and chargers. It had been working flawlessly before then, and I believe this was due to a software update, but can’t be sure. The charging port is free of dust, so this is not the reason.

Only a few of my cables are working to charge, but definitely none of the Apple cables. I haven’t figured out exactly what it is that characterizes the cables that work, as some thunderbolt cables work, but also some cheaper-looking USB-A to USB-C and plain USB-C cables. The chargers themselves don’t seem to be the culprit, since I’ve tried the (working) cables on fast chargers and older chargers and always seem to charge.

Anyway, it might be specific to my situation but I leave this comment out there in case anyone is having similar issues.

Update. After almost a week of consistent charging the issue came back. I would plug in my cable (not Apple but purchased from Amazon) and the battery would remain white and not turn to green indicating a charging situation. I tried flipping the head of the cable and that worked once or twice but not consistently. I found my original Apple branded brick and the original Apple 1m cable. It initially worked but, again, not consistently. I tried flipping the USB-C cable heads (switching the entire cable around so the head I plugged into the iPad was now plugged into the brick) and sometimes that helped and sometimes did not. Then I tried taking my case off. That worked once but, again, not consistently. This situation is just bizarre. It seems to randomly decide to charge and randomly decide not to. Cable manufacturer or brick manufacturer doesn’t seem to matter with the inconsistency. I am able to charge eventually after much effort usually so I’m not dead in the water like others.

This is a chronic, re-occurring problem.

Every other iPad other software update (it seems), causes this - and it is d*mn infuriating to have to try every charger, every cord, and be told that there is something wrong with your ipad - then magically after a few hours or days all is OK.

Every few months, thousands of people report that their iPads suddenly stop charging (weird coincidence that it coincides with an update). And we get tips and tutorials about swabbing our charging ports or getting the unit repaired.

Again, This is a chronic, re-occurring problem that Apple has yet to solve ... I wouldn't mind if they just acknowledged it ad not acted like we're clueless newbies.

(I remember this "policy" started when Steve Jobs was alive, and the wifi for the original iPad was wonky -- and we were told to reset our routers, and change settings etc - when it was an inherent flaw in the iPad istelf)

There is no technical reason; none of my iPads and other devices have ever had a problem charging after an update. If yours does there is something wrong with your iPad’s hardware.
