My iPad Pro not charging after updating

I updated my IPad 3rd gen to 17.5 and now it won't charge. I have tried different chargers and cords. Anyone having the same issue?

Begin with a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

Otherwise, these support pages should help with troubleshooting battery and charging issues:

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W (i.e., 2.4A @5V) or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters (1.0A @5V) intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow. Recent models of iPad are supplied with a 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Some third-party USB-C power adapters (and portable PowerBanks) may not support USB PD (Power Delivery). Power Delivery mutually negotiates the charging voltage; the source, load and cable are all elements involved in the negotiation protocol. Unless the Power Adapter explicitly supports USB PD, it will almost certainly fail to charge the iPad; proprietary charging standards, such as QC (Quick Charge), are not supported.

Many computer USB ports also cannot source sufficient power to charge an iPad. Unless explicitly designed for charging connected devices, computer USB ports are typically limited to 0.5-1A @5V (i.e., 2.5-5.0W).

If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad, Power Adapter and cable(s):

Same issue. Forced reset did not help. The USB connector works (I connect it to a monitor, and the display works fine, but iPad is not charging. Same setup with my MacBook works fine - charging as well as monitor). A couple of times when the power level went down low (around 10%) I was able to get it to charge back up to 100%, but after disconnecting charger, and reconnecting, it again will not charge the battery. No telling how long this approach will continue to work. I use the iPad every day and depend on it, so this is not a satisfactory solution.

I don’t understand why iPadOs would consider the charger as an accessory if it’s basic functionality. Now, if you ran out of battery what? This is absurd

Everything other than the iPad itself is an accessory; Apple Pencil, keyboards, mouses, screen protectors, and, of course, power sources. There are most likely over 100 power sources from a dozen or more vendors that will work with an iPad, and probably an equal or larger number that you shouldn’t use because they have not been certified as safe, either for the iPad or the user. The simple test: It must be certified as Made for iOS devices (Mfi). If it isn’t it can damage the iPad, and many of them can injure or kill the user. All Apple power sources ever made qualify, as do any from a reputable manufacturer (Griffin, Anker, Mophie, Samsung, LG, etc).

hey did you get any kind of fix? I am still unable to charge mine it randomly chooses to charge sometimes and doesn't charge most of the time

Perhaps reading the 4 pages in this thread that you skipped over could provide some guidance. As the symptom can have many possible causes, you need to troubleshoot, as suggested in this message thread.

what an entertaining response. laughing a lot ... thanks.

I HAVE read the 4 pages (you seem to like pasting that to everyone - it's kind of condescending)... I have also read the 400 pages of comments from people all over the web (and today on twitter/x) who have the same problem - and who have reported the same issue over and over again every other time there;s an update.

Also

I was commenting on how Apple (and actually a lot of tech companies) don't acknowledge a problem leading their customers to think that it is *their* fault ... only later to fix the problem without much acknowledgement. The Steve Jobs' example was the first time - with the (in)famous Wifi issue in 2009-ish.

A lot of people coincidentally are experiencing the same problem today ... we can't ALL have the wrong settings and dirty ports, on the same day.

Yes I and other senior volunteers post that a lot, because close to 100% of new posts on the end of a log thread obviously have not read any of it. I’m happy that you are the exception that proves the rule.

Apple will generally acknowledge consistent problems that are actually reported to them. Posting this in this user to user forum is not a way to report a problem. Considering that there are roughly a half billion iPads in use, unless there are a huge number of identical problem reports that can be traced to the same cause Apple will correctly treat it as a problem with your specific device.

I updated my iPad Pro 12.9 (4th gen) to 17.5.1 a couple of weeks ago and it completely stopped working whenever not plugged in…. It seemed to still be on 100% battery and said was charging - so as was usable on mains power I planned on continuing to use it plugged in until whatever issue this is got patched…

Turn for the worst today however, as when I went to use it … it now has decided it’s 100% flat.. I can only presume it was left unplugged doing its chain boot up restart thing and has drained itself fully…

it now won’t even power on even when connected to a mains charger.. all PD compliant… 20+Volt fast chargers (multiple plugs and cables tried)

the most I get is it turns on, beeps to say it’s charging and immediately reboots 🤦‍♂️ this my options to get any power back into it seem zero as it uses more power in this loop than it charges.. and try as I may I can’t get it to stay turned off to charge up

my whole life is on that iPad, and I need to get it off, kinda hesitant to take a trip to the Genius Bar, as you can guarantee that whatever they do, a factory reset will be included 😬

… annoyingly I’ve had a new 12.9 6th gen in the wardrobe too… but never got round to migrating the contents 🙄

(and no … didn’t back it up in forever - I’m an IT professional - we don’t practice what we preach) 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

(Clip of issue uploaded to YouTube acc)

All previous steps already tried out multiple times to no avail .. 🥵

Here’s another to further confuse 😂

when I do get flicks of life monetarily.. it’s saying 100% charged, and that it’s 1am on Thursday January 1st …. Last time we had a 1/1 on a Thursday was 2015 😂 it’s a 2020 model! 😂

sadly no joy, when plugged in to a brand new unused (one of my old iPads that never had its charger used) - 12V with a known working usb A to C cable … it doesn’t even attempt to turn on at all… not even a flicker… nada.. nothing…

frustrating as I need my data off it 😬🤦‍♂️

Thank you for your reply. I have another cable and a higher watt charger coming later today to try. I will look into a thunderbolt. We have tried numerous chargers, portable chargers, cables, etc

We were able to see on her phone that the iPad was backed up to iCloud yesterday. We were glad to see that. She is still heartbroken, as she has taken excellent care of it. We saved for months to get it for her and it was a combination gift.

Replacement of it is nearly out of the question right now. This is the first major issue I have had with an Apple product and I have been using their devices since the iPhone 4. I am upset if this is a known issue.

We do have an appointment at Best Buy tomorrow. But from everything I have read it does not look promising.
