How do I update my AirPods Pro 2nd gen?

They are supposed to, but most are finding that they do not stay connected via Bluetooth when they are in the case and closed. I have tried the gambit of forget device , reconnecting, etc. I have even left the case open with the AirPods in so they retain Bluetooth connectivity and tried in the realm of “it can’t hurt to try” connected the case to he phone with a cable. NOPE.
