YouTube playback controls (fast forward, rewind) don’t work when playing via airplay

When streaming YouTube on my iPhone and playing the audio via AirPlay on my HomePod mini, I’ve found that the playback controls do not allow you to fast-forward or rewind - only play/pause. I haven’t noticed this issue with any other streaming service.

The same issue occurs when watching YouTube via the browser on my M1 MacBook Air, and using an AirPlay device as the audio playback destination, such as a Sonos speaker or the same HomePod mini. Asking Siri to rewind or fast-forward results in a denial along the lines of “that function isn’t available/I can’t do that right now”.

I don’t have this issue occur when using either airpods or even non-apple bluetooth headphones, and nor does it occur when playing content via Chromecast to Chromecast-enabled devices, so it seems to strictly be an AirPlay + YouTube issue.

I just got a HomePod mini and I’m having this exact issue with this speaker. You can’t use the slider, it actually infuriatingly will push it back to the exact place where you left it. Oddly enough, what I have found, is that, if while the HomePod is still connected, you close the video you’re watching and reopen it (from history) it will then allow you to move around in the playback and use the rewind feature.

Playback control seems to be an ongoing issue that the HomePod mini interferes with. I have AirPods Pro 2 with no issues and multiple other speakers like a couple Bose soundlink 2s and some JBL flips, google home smart speaker things, and several others, and this is an issue SPECIFIC to HomePod. So far the HomePod makes me mad several times a day, I’m hoping I’ll warm up to it.

YouTube is not an Apple Product. Contact the app developer here --> App Support or YouTube Help - Google Support

  • AirPlay primarily focuses on streaming audio/video, with limited control functionalities on the receiving device.
  • While some AirPlay receivers offer basic playback controls (play/pause), advanced features like fast forward and rewind might not be supported.
