Title:
[Safari > Open File > file selection pop-up] “Show Items As” not respecting "Users Last Chosen Preference” (or system-wide “Finder” equivalent setting)
Description:
On MacOS 14.4.1, but likely many others...
…(even) when a user has the following selected "Finder > View > as Columns” (as their default for Finder)
…when a User goes to “Safari > File > Open File”, the file browser dialog does NOT respect the “as Columns” setting above (which, would be nice for consistency / easy to set in one place, but not a deal breaker)
…however, when a user does the same (i.e. “Safari > File > Open File”) and selects the “as Columns” in that file browser dialog, Safari (etc) is not recalling that preference when the User comes back and does the same thing (i.e. “Safari > File > Open File”). And, that’s very frustrating that Safari isn’t respecting our preference there.
That said, doing either of the following DOES work correctly...
…”DuckDuckGo browser > Google Calendar > create calendar item > Upload file”, doing this WILL respect the last setting a user made in the pop-up file selection dialog
…”Firefox browser > File > Open File”, doing this WILL respect the last setting a user made in the pop-up file selection dialog
So, why can’t Safari do the same and at least remember the user’s last choice of file view?
…is Apple recommending we use browsers *other than* Safari to solve this issue that’s be open since at least 2021? (That feels like the best solution here to me, at this point in time, and seems like both a quality-control and the user-feedback-process failing)
…i.e. This issue has been open by MANY other users on this forum, but no solution given, and most importantly no software solution has been made by Apple to fix this (for something Firefox/DuckDuckGo browsers already have figured out)
…at worst, for something pretty darn straight forward and that Apple software developers should be able to fix pretty easily: Apple Discussion forum users have been lead down diagnostic rabbit holes and/or recommending Users set “Always View in Column View” via the “View Options” on *every* folder in their system via Finder (hopefully, it wasn’t any official Apple employees that lead any users down rabbit holes for this pretty straight forward issue, but you might want to look into why this has been such a frustrating, unaddressed, long standing issue for so many Users for so long).
Thank you for listening, and in advanced for any software-backed fix you can make to Safari/etc. to get Safari’s functionality back into parity with other major/popular browsers.
