Why does my MacBook Pro's screen flash very briefly white then return to normal?

Why does my MacBook screen flash very briefly white then return to normal? It happens very occasionally, maybe once a day or every so often. It’s not a flickering, just white for a quarter of a second then back to normal.

updated to Sonoma 14.4.1

I'm on Sonoma 14.5, Macbook Air M2. The screen flash started under Sonoma. For me, it happens when I press an invalid key combination for the current app. For example, Command+Q when on Finder, or Command+S when on Notes.

It appears to be some kind of accessibility problem. I checked System Settings>Accessibility, but the "Flash the screen when an alert sound occurs" is turned off. I'm not aware of any other settings which can turn this feature on, so I suspect that it's a bug, or a "benefit" that has slipped out. It's a tad irritating because I don't need to be reminded when I make a slip!
